Some think that God “took” someone when they die, however I do not believe it is the will of God that our loved one, or anyone connected with them, lose the battle of addiction and check out of this world.
However, I do believe that there are individuals who lose all their hope, desire and will to continue to fight their addictions and in their despair, they just simply give up. When they reach that state of mind, they, on some level, simply willingly “let go” of their body. The spirit lives on and I do feel like God understands when someone is broken and not in their right mind, so that they are not “killing” themselves as in committing suicide, but simply giving up on life here in their body.
There are times we can pray and intercede and the right people will come into our loved one’s life and they will be able to find their way out of their addiction. Then there are times when their will is honored by God because He gives us free will. We need to stop blaming ourselves with all the “coulda”, “shoulda”, “woulda” voices that haunt us and often “control” us. They are not from God! It’s really hard to let go of the guilt, shame and regrets – but that is not where God wants us to live and it only defeats and can destroy us.
May you find forgiveness for all involved and especially for yourself. May you be able to let go of the shame and regrets that are only lies from evil and do not do us any good or help anyone. May you find peace within your soul and being as you learn to accept God’s love for us and His willingness to walk with us through the struggles, hurt and pain into a place of rest that only comes from God’s grace. Only He can give us the assurance that they are with Him and at peace, as He helps us to continue to be here for all the others left behind. He wants us (and so would the one who left) to go on and continue with a fulfilling and joyous life even though our loved one has “moved” away to a place where we cannot talk with them or be with them for the time being. May you find comfort in knowing they are at peace from all the struggles and torment and that you will be reunited with them, as they are already reunited with the ones who have left before us.
My prayers are with you. God knows who you are and cares for you as only a truly loving and caring parent can. I pray you are able to receive His love and peace and move into a place of rest in your spirit and soul.
