When you “miss” a day with your loved one, it can never be repeated or gotten back. A fight or disagreement leaves hurt words and often unanswered questions. Things that shouldn’t have been said and things that you later will wish you had said. When things aren’t going well and anger flares, words can’t be “taken back”. They can be forgiven but usually won’t be forgotten.
It’s so easy to let “things” said, done or “perceived” send us into a “tizzy”. We give into our emotions and “away we go”. It takes time, patience and some diligent work to learn to step back, breathe and let only good and positive flow out of your “weapon” called a mouth. One way that helps I learned a long time ago, was to think if the issue I’m getting so upset about and ask myself, “will actually matter or make a difference in 10 years, 10 months or maybe even 10 days?” I used to tell my son that “thought” when he was young because he would be getting upset about something and then, after he was grown and I was upset about something – he said it back to me and I had to stop and laugh because it was so true! And I realized he was actually listening way back then and got it! – So don’t every give up and think all your energy and effort is going for naught!
You have to find something that will set the “trigger” so you go back to what will work for you to keep your “balance” and stop before you do something you will say or regret. A very dear friend shared the wisdom her mother used to say to her to “Never pass up a good opportunity to keep your mouth shut”! I have that one posted where I will see it on a regular basis. The other one that has always worked well was “If you can’t say anything good about someone or something, don’t say anything at all”.
When you are “going” out of control, the best thing to do is step back and ask God to help you say only what he would want you to say – which is a whole lot easier said than done.
Blessings as you face your struggles and I believe you can move into overcoming them and dealing with your loved ones in a better way.
